Cassie Rose Burns recounts her life as an American living abroad. But she's not the only American.

19.8 million people have watched Burns' film, and comments on it have varied from support to jealousy to incredulity. Perhaps the best way to put it all together is in a single comment that has 34,800 likes: "I think the American dream is to leave America."

"That girl who lives in Italy"

As "that American girl living in Italy," Burns shares her experiences on social media and identifies herself on the "Tik Tok" app.

She talks candidly about her experiences, outlines cultural differences, and provides tips for visiting Italian towns.

Following her move to Florence in 2021 with her Italian boyfriend—whom she had met while on vacation a few years prior—the 30-year-old began sharing content on TikTok.

Traveling overseas was out of the question in the early months of 2021, but Burns' movies soon became well-known for their clever and humorous blend of wish-fulfilling fiction and escapist information regarding the reality of living overseas.

Currently, Burns has a million TikTok followers, and people wave to her in the street as if they knew her. The American influencer capitalized on her popularity to launch her own line of products, adding e-books and arranging group tours to her repertoire.

Her life in Italy is now a full-time career that she documents.

Burns, a former New York dancer, claims that this was an entirely coincidental career change. She is amazed by the level of success she has attained on TikTok.

Burns is not alone, though. The American influencer abroad has proliferated in recent years as TikTok gains traction and Instagram accepts short-form video content in the form of Instagram Reels.

If you use these sites regularly, you've probably seen one or more similar videos, regardless of the algorithm.

The fact that the material posted by American social media user Elizabeth Staub, 31, is "like an easy daydream" or "escape," makes her enjoy watching TikTokers who have relocated overseas.

However, Staub told CNN that it's a fantasy that is "also achievable to some extent." Although the daily lives of these people resemble something from a romantic comedy on Netflix, they are actual people. For Staub, at least in the few minutes it took to watch one of their videos, this reality made it simple to imagine herself in their position.

"Seeing the differences between our country and where these influencers are and imagining what it would be like to live there romantically," Staub said, was what she truly enjoyed doing.

Another 26-year-old Boston resident on social media, Erin Connery, says, "I follow people who live where I want to live." CNN quoted Connery as saying it's "like a hit of dopamine, every time you see these aesthetically pleasing videos."

She made the point that these Americans living abroad are the real deal, and TikTok viewers can follow them and experience these events through them because of their content streams.

The small things' viral appeal

American Quentin Pettiford's content revolves around his life in Norway.

The focus of American Quentin Pettiford's writing is his time spent living in Norway. Quentin (Tik Tok MoneyTimeQ) is credited.

Small elements are key to many of the most well-liked videos made by American creators abroad.

Quentin Pettiford, a well-known figure on social media, relocated to Norway in 2021 at the age of 24. He moved abroad after falling in love with a European woman, much like Burns. Though his TikTok statistics indicate his fans would prefer to hear his opinions on the distinctions between Norwegian and American grocery stores, people love to hear about his international love story.

He was impressed the first time he browsed the aisles of a grocery store in Norway. While the encounter was routine, even dull, for his Norwegian colleague, Pettiford saw the store as a goldmine of fascinating cultural contrasts.

The bread slicers, which he had never seen in an American grocery shop, perplexed him. He rapidly picked up the skill of scanning his receipts to unlock doors when he left specific Norwegian establishments. Pettiford told CNN, "Everything about grocery stores here in Norway is completely different."

Pettiford started recording videos right away and uploading them to his TikTok account. He made note of the fact that he was aware "that it would be very popular and interesting if the right people saw it."

When Pettiford opened TikTok one day, he saw thousands of followers, comments, and opinions. His debut video, he said, "got two million views in two weeks." "You know, I will not let this opportunity slip away from us," he recalled telling himself.

Pettiford started producing stuff. These days, he occasionally includes humorous remarks on cultural differences in his writings, along with peeks into his everyday life with his Norwegian wife and their small daughter.

American Expats and Popular Culture

On her TikTok account, American content creator Fatima shares stories about her travels through Paris. Thank you, TheQueenFatima

Pettiford and Burns both started publishing during the epidemic, in part because they relocated overseas and in part because they discovered they had more time.

However, before she started sharing details of her life with the public in early 2021, Fatima, 30, an American content developer, resided in Paris for a number of years. She is the owner of the TikTok account @itsthequeenfatima.

Similar to the dancer Burns, Fatima was employed in the performing arts sector prior to 2020 and discovered that social media provided a "different way to create" during the outbreak of the Corona virus. The popularity of "Emily in Paris" on Netflix encouraged Fatima to start writing openly. She asked that her last name not be used in this piece for private reasons.

When the wildly successful series premiered in late 2020, fans were instantly enthralled with the story of a fictional American social media influencer who moves to Paris and experiences events that have little to do with the city.

Fatima thought the series was great and that more authentic moments from "The Americans in Paris" should be shown. as ancient as eternity. A week prior to her relocation to France, she recalls seeing the Broadway musical "An American in Paris," which was based on the 1950s motion picture.

The cliché from popular culture that describes an American relocating to Europe and leading a wonderful life precedes the 21st century and goes beyond Paris. "Three Coins in the Fountain" is a film that was shot in Rome in 1954.

Fatima notes that "white women from a certain socio-economic background who move to Europe to pursue a 'eat, pray, love' lifestyle" are shown in the majority of these movies and TV shows.

Fatima remarked, "Being a black American in Paris speaks to how I live my life in this country," realizing that her TikTok had a chance to increase the reach of mainstream pop culture.
